Village Hall 2005 - 2006: annual review

The following serves as an overview of activity in the Village Hall.

The Village Hall committee are very appreciative of the money that comes from the village as a whole as part of the precept. This goes a significant way towards covering basic costs such as electricity, insurance and the clock but by no means completely covers these costs. It does mean however that the Hall doesn't start the year from behind.

Village Hall maintenance

Using money from grants and flood insurance we have been able to complete a major programme of structural repair and renovation:

During the coming year the repair programme will continue with a focus on the interior and in particular the main function room. Grants are being applied for but the process as always is slow and the work is being funded from the remaining cash in the bank with the hope that grants will be granted.

Recreation field

The field is part of the Stephens Charity, given for 'the use of the village'. Neglected over recent years, the Committee and their partners spent several evenings last summer clearing the scrub that had started to encroach on the open space. With regular grass cutting, the field returned last year to a more useable space and asset to the village. Grass cutting is however a costly exercise and the committee will review the value of this commitment at the end of this summer.

An informal village BBQ is planned in June. Please come along and show us that it is worth maintaining the field!

A delegation from a group of youngsters in the village came to the committee and presented a proposal to create a series of bike ramps around the periphery. The committee feel that the use of the field by the village should be encouraged and granted the group permission. It is hoped that the piles of earth will be converted to the proposed jumps now that better weather is returning.

Event programme

We have tried to ensure that an event of some form has happened most months during the year.

Performances by two theatre groups, taking advantage of Wiltshire's Rural Arts programme, were both enjoyable evenings. The performance of 'Fetch' and 'Bawdy Tales' were very successful with audiences of over 50 people.

The main fund raiser during the year was of course the Village Fete and the sun shone and a great day was had by all. The Christmas Party is the other great village event, one which the committee particularly enjoy organising. As always it was an excellent way to begin the festive marathon.

A barn dance, which demanded a significant outlay by the Hall to book the band, was a very enjoyable evening although it would have been better (and less tiring) to see more from the village than the few that came along with the Hail committee and their partners!

Similarly the Medieval Banquet demanded much effort by the committee but it was very disappointing to see so few people. Luckily we still managed to make a profit on the night ? saved yet again by the world famous Cholderton Raffle.

Quiz evenings and a beetle drive have added to the programme. The most recent being the highly enjoyable St George's Day quiz.

These events however are not all about raising money but are as much to do with providing an enjoyable social focus for the village. Certainly all of us on the Committee enjoy the social aspect of our planning meetings but would be encouraged by more people joining in and suggesting ideas for future events.

Special thanks

The only reason that anything happens at all at the Hall is due to the enthusiasm and energy of the committee. No disappointment appears to dampen their spirits and sense of fun, and 1 would like to give my special thanks to all those involved who have done (and spent) so much on behalf of the Hall.

Limited Edition Prints

A small number of limited edition prints of the same two views, signed by the artist are also available for £15 each.

The Duck Race

An occasional event, dependent on the stream flowing, has been a Duck race, held in the spring in previous years by former residents Mike and Sue Crawshaw to raise funds for the Village Hall and St Nicholas Church. The Village Hall committee has decided to take on the organisation of this lively and entertaining event, but with no sign of river it is unlikely to take place this year.
